Summer has arrived, and the many varieties of plumerias growing in our backyard are beautifully in season. Their colorful petals and unforgettable fragrance make this one of our favorite times of the year at Orchid Boutique.
Every time I smell a plumeria, I am transported to the tropical islands of Hawaiʻi. Its sweet fragrance brings back wonderful memories of spending time at the beaches during my college years—the warm sunshine, ocean air, and carefree days by the water.
Although plumerias have become closely associated with Hawaiʻi, they are originally native to tropical regions of Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and parts of South America. Plumerias were introduced to Hawaiʻi in the 1800s and eventually became one of the islands’ most beloved lei flowers. Today, the plumeria lei is treasured for its beauty, fragrance, and connection to love, celebration, friendship, and the spirit of aloha.

To keep your lei looking fresh, lightly mist the flowers with clean water or a floral hydration mist. Place the lei back inside its protective box or a loosely sealed bag and store it in the refrigerator. Keep it away from the freezer compartment, direct cold-air vents, and fresh fruit. Remove the lei shortly before wearing it so the flowers can gently return to room temperature.
